The Facets That Make The Stone…

Black Tuesday

Posted by Mary Diamond on 11/24/2009

It’s been a dreary month, but somehow we still haven’t seen snow here in Northern Illinois. I’ve taken up my knitting project again, since the weather will soon require Bastian to wear a scarf. Once it is finished I will start up on the cross-stitch projects I finished this past summer and get them mounted for framing. Unfortunately, I was just practicing a new craft when i did them, so I did not account for the extra fabric I’d need to stretch them -wish me luck!

In other news… I have not lost any of the 8 pounds I was formerly lamenting about here. I’ve only worked out maybe two days since I swore I’d lose it again. Honestly, as voluptuous as I am, most people would balk if they knew my actual weight. They wouldn’t guess it, I don’t think. I’m not even brave enough to reveal it here to my anonymous audience. Just know that something HAS to change -and now that I have an office where I can schedule out my days better I’m hoping for the best.

Today’s activities:

  • Clean out and move the fishtank from downstairs into my office, so I can clean out and sell the old one.
  • Take junk out of the dining room and find places for it.
  • Move the kennel into the dining room so I can further organize my office space.
  • Re-position all houseplants so they get adequate sun and are out of the way.

That doesn’t seem so bad, does it? Let’s get started right after I finish this damn scarf.

Happy Halloween Do-Over!

Posted by Mary Diamond on 11/09/2009

Wow, I got a crazy workout yesterday. I’ve been lamenting the last few weeks that I’ve gained weight instead of losing it -go figure, I stop excersizing and gain weight! The weather had been crappy, everybody in the house had been sick for some interval, and my motivation levels were way down. SEPT09 031I pulled out the Wii the other day and told myself I’d start using it regularly again, but I only did it for about two days. I’ve been telling myself that I ‘ll aim for two days a week, as a sort of initial goal, but the beautiful weather inspired me to ride my bike again.

After probably 4 months of searching for the harness to attach my wire bike basket, I found it this week and put it on the bike yesterday. It works really well, doesn’t inhibit my maneuvering at all but adds a lot of weight to the front of the bike. It really only seems to be an issue when I’m trying to use the kick stand and leave the bike. It falls over pretty easily -but I now have more storage capacity. The basket has a quick release, too, so I can take it off and carry it if I want to.

My bicycle gang/friends were at the McDonalds nearby when the in-laws came to get the boys, so I rode out to meet them and we embarked upon what would turn out (for me) to be a 14.5 mile ride. We rode past the grocery store and then through a neighborhood with a park that was right on the bike path going East to Rock Cut State Park. As we rode we all enjoyed the mild temperature and the smells of burning leaves and autumn air. The dam was beautiful, although the park was literally bustling with people, and there were really nice cameras everywhere for me to lust after. We managed to pick up some litter at the park -and also carried our own litter in my basket until we found garbage cans for it all.

SEPT09 036There were a few moments when I thought perhaps my overburdened heart would burst out of my chest or my lungs were going to seize up and kill me -it’s not easy keeping up with guys who are a little younger and in a lot better shape. I did not give up at any point, though, unless you count walking up really steep hills. My bike chain and derailer are both seriously rusty and in need of oil or grease, so it is sometimes really difficult to shift into the gears I need to make it up a hill. In any case, we ended up in the older portion of the park and found one of the really old shelter houses to take a break in. I’ve been trying to research whether or not this one was built by Roosevelt and the Civilian Conservation Corps, but I’m not having much luck. Any ideas?

Once we made it to just about the highest point in the park, on an old roughly paved road, we turned around and sped down the hills that had taken us probably 20 minutes to get to the top of. I was a bit scared of the speed initially, as we lined our bikes up at the top of the hill and took a picture to immortalize the moment. It turned out to be less frightening than I had anticipated, despite the patches of dry sliding leaves creeping across the road in some places and the gravelly landslides stretching across in others. On our way back Mike called and informed me that the kids were home and we were out of diapers, so I actually stopped at Logli’s and picked up diapers and a few makimoto rolls from the fresh sushi bar there. It felt kind of awesome to bring home necessities in my new bike basket; but not nearly as awesome as it felt to have biked 14 miles without keeling over when I haven’t been on a ride even a fraction of that length in a couple of months. It all makes me a little sad that winter is at our door. Saturday night I ended up having a fire out in the back yard and the kids got to enjoy a little bit of the outdoors despite all of us still hacking and coughing up crap from the colds we’re all recovering from. After they went to bed some friends came to join in and all in all it was a very pleasant evening. I ended up admitting to everyone that I was having a Halloween do-over since I’d been sick for the actual day. I guess overall I’d have to say this weekend was a success. I even got my van started! Tuesday morning we’re going in for a diagnostic to see how much it’s going to cost me to get this vehicle in working order for the winter.

Halloween itself could have been more exciting for me, as I stayed home that evening instead of going out, but the kids had fun trick or treating and friends came over to keep me company with the Beatles: Rock Band. Bastian was a Grim Reaper type character, but his mask got annoying and he ended up just walking around in a black tattered robe. Charlie had chosen the fire fighter costume, mostly for the hat, and he ended up in the stroller by the halfway point. Still, we did alright on candy and the moon was nearly full in the sky which made for an awesome spooky night sky. I miss October already!

Autumn Changes Everything

Posted by Mary Diamond on 10/07/2009

I love autumn. Yes, the weather is getting colder and I’m not going to have much more time for bike rides this year… but I still love it. Some parts of autumn are pure comfort… and others remind me that I will someday become the Crone.

The trip to Florida was awesome even though I wasn’t able to ride some of the roller coasters.

Yay, Wii Fit!

Yay, Wii Fit!

We were so excited to ride the biggest ones, but my trunk junk got in the way. I know I’m not petite, ok? But I have given birth to two children and dammit I’m voluptuous! Now my squishy top half would have been fine smooshed under that huge shoulder architecture to keep me from tumbling out of the seat upside down. I was tall enough and plenty of people heavier than me were getting on board… but inside my hips there’s this thing called a “pelvis” and it just doesn’t budge when you try to squeeze it into the seat guards the keep your butt from sliding out sideways or something. Good thing for us they have these “sample” seats you can try out before you stand in line for a 20-60 minute wait. Friends have reported not fitting into the upper portion of the safety equipment due to having manly barrel chests.

The thing that really got to me, though, was that more than half of the roller coasters we were intent on riding were incompatible with my ass. That really hurt! Universal Studios was an amazing park and the Halloween Horror Nights was a spectacular experience… but I wanted to ride some coasters there, and my body shape prevented it. I’m not morbidly obese… Nor are my hips the size of a volkswagen (oh god, maybe I’m just in denial) but I seriously felt like jumping onto the set of the first Jerry Springer show I could find. Then I felt kind of… disoriented. I went through pretty much all the stages of mourning with each sweet ride that we walked away from in the muggy heat of Florida. Double Dragons? Nope. Rock-It? Nope. The Hulk? Not a chance.

At least I got to see this live girl writhing in a glass box filled with rats. Thought I was joking? Muaha.

MySpace Has Opened My Eyes

Posted by Mary Diamond on 03/09/2008

I went to a friend’s bachelorette party on Friday night and had a great time. We sang karaoke, saw a band we’ve loved since high school, and generally got along swimmingly.

Of course there were cameras present and I ended up babysitting one for a reveler. I took some great pictures of our night out. Today, I was eagerly checking MySpace for the photos to be posted -and they were!

Bouncing up and down with excitement, I opened the photo album and started browsing. Suddenly I was hit with one of those wake-up call moments. There, right before my eyes, was a picture of me smiling with three other girls. I looked positively WIDE. My guts are getting out of hand, like, seriously.

I guess I have this mental picture of my figure ten years ago and I tend to just assume that I still look that way from certain angles. But the picture doesn’t lie -those ten pounds truly exist.

So I’m putting my foot down. Both feet actually, repeatedly in a rhythmic pattern set to music until my heart rate goes up and my body starts burning off the fat.

Because damn. I’m a fatty-boom-ba-latty.

It’s a Fat Bottom Shame…

Posted by Mary Diamond on 12/31/2007

I am severely disappointed in Old Navy. A few years ago they introduced a section for Plus sized women, and the model for their plus sizes was actually *gasp* a plus sized woman!

Most stores take their typical size 2 prototype of each style and just add however many inches it takes to make it a 12 or an 18. The problem with that is most women who wear “plus sized” clothing are not shaped like a size 2 woman. There is a distinct difference between size and shape. Size is a reference to how big something is. My ass, for example, is pretty big. But shape is totally different. My behind, as large as it is, is not box shaped or flat like a slope. It is round, rotund, curvaceous.

So the plus sized clothing at Old Navy was a dream come true for a fat girl in the midwest who’s really not satisfied buying a circus tent from Wal-mart and trying to make it look stylish. Granted, many discount stores have been making efforts to “fashionize” their big-girl departments in the past few years. Still, though, it’s difficult to find clothing in my size that doesn’t bring to mind my mother in her elasticized pants and print t-shirts.

Today, however, I was at Old Navy with gift cards in hand, ready to find some great deals in their clearance rack. I was doubly disappointed to find that not only are the discounts less than deep this year -but the size 4 girl who was working there politely informed us that they “got rid of” the plus sizes. Thanks a pantload.

I guess it’s back to saving up for three weeks just to buy one really nice looking shirt from Lane Bryant. It’s okay, though. I still make someone’s rockin’ world go ’round.
